Kiwis out on US Open qualifiers

After a three hour epic match against China's Yafan Wang, Kiwi tennis player Marina Erakovic has missed out on qualifying for the US Open.

She went down 6-7(5) in the first set but came back to win 6-4 in a 72 minute second set.

But the 113th ranked who battled 14 double faults against just four aces went down 3-6 in the third set to her 163rd-ranked opponent.

It was a tough day too for wildcard Rubin Statham who lost in straight sets in just over 90 minutes to Duckhee Lee, the 191st ranked player from Korea.

Statham, ranked 431, came close in the first set, going down 6-7(3) but was unable to rally in the second, losing 3-6.

Michael Venus, Marcus Daniell and Artem Sitak willl play doubles main draw matches ahead of the tournament start on August 29.
