Kiwi kayaker Finn Butcher has stormed into the semi-finals of the final canoe slalom World Cup round in Tacen, Slovenia.

Butcher qualified directly for the top-40 K1 showdown, qualifying in 16th spot with a clean run of 106.06secs, 5.16sec behind leader Michal Smolen of the US.

Butcher's New Zealand teammate Callum Gilbert also kept his perfect semi-final record intact this season, qualifying through the repechage after a gate touch and subsequent 2sec penalty saw him finish 42nd in the first round.

He eased through the repechage clean, posting 106.18sec to qualify fifth and continue the run in which he has advanced to the semi-finals of five World Cup rounds this season.

New Zealand Olympian Mike Dawson, who finished 10th in Rio, pulled out of the final World Cup round after picking up a wrist injury and struggling last week in Prague.
