Kiwis can finally pack away their umbrellas - well, at least for one week.

New Zealand can expect drier, sunnier weather through to next week as a high pressure moves into the Tasman Sea, WeatherWatch says.

While there may be "a few coastal showers here and there", bright sunshine should blanket up to 80 per cent of the country, providing a welcome relief from recent heavy downpours.

"New Zealand has been hit by three significant wet events in the past six weeks, with each event bringing one to three months worth of rain in just a few days for some areas," the weather forecaster said.

Almost the entire country, with the exception of Southland at the bottom of the South Island, has now experienced higher-than-average rainfall this year.

"The country is becoming saturated," WeatherWatch said.

For those keen to get out of the cities to enjoy the sunshine, WeatherWatch said they have until early next week to enjoy the fine spell with isolated heavy falls possibly returning next Wednesday or Thursday.
