World No.1 Lydia Ko has completed a solid opening round at the HSBC Women's Champions tournament with a birdie to sit three shots astray of leader Michelle Wie.

Ko's only bogey at at the new Tanjong course in Singapore came at the par-three seventh when she found the bunker.

Otherwise, the 19-year-old Kiwi looked steady in collecting four birdies to card a three-under 69 for a share of 12th place with seven others.

Wie, who only made the tournament on a sponsor's invitation, fired eight birdies and a pair of bogeys in her six-under 66 and holds a one-stroke lead over a five-strong chasing bunch.

Included in the pack are world No.2 Ariya Jutanugarn (Thailand) and former world No.1 Inbee Park of Korea.

Ko is showing improving form after beginning the year with a 46th placing at the Women's Australian Open in Adelaide last month.

She finished eighth in her second tournament of 2017 at LPGA Thailand last week.
