New Zealand's Lydia Ko has played second-fiddle to her playing partners to be three shots off the lead heading into the final round of the Marathon Classic in Ohio.

World No.1 Ko shared the lead with Hyo Joo Kim at the LPGA tournament's midway point but the 19th-ranked Korean enjoyed the better third round at the Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania.

Kim shot a sizzling seven-under 64 to surge to 15-under, three clear of Ko and the third member of the final group, American Alison Lee.

Like Kim, Ko was flawless on Saturday but her four birdies couldn't match the seven of the leader.

The 19-year-old Kiwi's best patch came midway through, shooting successive birdies from holes seven to nine.

Lee carded a 66 while two big names loom one shot behind Ko - American former world No.1 Stacy Lewis and Thailand's Ariya Jutanugarn, a three-time LPGA winner this season.

Ko, who the Marathon Classic in 2014, is coming off a third placing at last week's US Women's Open in California.
