Kuczynski wins Peru presidential vote

Neo-liberal Pedro Pablo Kuczynski has narrowly won the run-off to become Peru's next president, defeating Keiko Fujimori.

Liberal economist Pedro Pablo Kuczynski has been elected president of Peru, narrowly beating right-wing populist Keiko Fujimori by a hair's-breadth margin of less than a quarter per cent, the country's election authority says.

With all votes in, Kuczynski, 77, had 50.12 per cent while Fujimori, 41, won 49.88 per cent. Kuczynski's margin of victory, just 41,000 votes, is the narrowest in Peru's history.

In the first round of voting in April, Fujimori, leader of the rightist Popular Force Party and the daughter of the country's imprisoned former president Alberto Fujimori, won 40 per cent of votes to Kuczynski's 21 per cent.
