LA Galaxy lose, Gerrard set to retire

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard's playing career could be over after the LA Galaxy's MLS Cup hopes were ended by the Colorado Rapids.

The 36-year-old Gerrard scored in the penalty shoot-out which decided the match after the tie finished 1-1 on aggregate, but his was the only successful Galaxy spot-kick and the Rapids won it 3-1.

Shkelzen Gashi scored for Colorado in the 36th minute and it finished 1-0 after extra-time.

Former Tottenham man Giovanni dos Santos missed a penalty for the Galaxy while Ashley Cole and Jeff Larentowicz saw their attempts saved by Tim Howard.

The loss ends the Galaxy's season, and with Gerrard's contract due to expire in December - and with little suggestion of an extension - the 36-year-old could be set for retirement.

Last month an Instagram message from Gerrard sparked speculation that he was calling it a day - although the tribute to Galaxy supporters had been sent to mark their fan appreciation night.

Even so, Liverpool boss Juergen Klopp later said Gerrard was always welcome at the club as he was linked with a possible coaching role.
