Labour changes its rules on list ranking

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 14/07/2016

Labour party members will have a role in the ranking of list candidates for next year's election.

Party president Nigel Haworth says the rule change was decided at Labour's centenary conference last week.

"The changes mean Labour Party members will now be able to rank local candidates at regional list conferences," he said on Thursday.

"The party's moderating committee - which determines Labour's final party list - will now be a smaller, more strategic body."

The ranking of list candidates, which determines who gets into parliament outside of electorate seat results, can be contentious.

The Greens allow their members to rank list candidates.
