Labour-Greens only just behind in new poll

A new poll shows a potential Labour-Greens alliance just one percentage point behind National.

The latest Newshub-Reid Research poll, released on Monday, has National on 45.1 per cent, down almost 2 per cent.

Labour and the Greens together have 44.2 per cent.

Neither National nor Labour and the Greens would have enough seats to govern alone, meaning NZ First - on just over 8 per cent - could be crucial in deciding who ends up in power.

But Prime Minister John Key isn't worried.

"Polls move around a few points. On the overall scheme of things it's consistent with where we won our elections in 08, 11 and 14, so not dramatic," he said.

"Every election under MMP is a tight one and National's well and truly aware it needs to poll a pretty big number to form the government - 45 per cent's a pretty big number."
