Two-time Afghanistan veteran Dan Rosewarne will contest next year's election as Labour's candidate in Waimakariri.

The NZ Army Staff Sergeant is one of the party's new "energetic and fresh" candidates heading into the 2017 vote, Labour General Secretary Andrew Kirton announced on Wednesday.

Waimakariri is currently held by National MP Matt Doocey.

"Waimakariri is made up of many strong communities and I will be using all of my experience (to) make sure these voices are heard loud and clear in parliament," Mr Rosewarne said.

The father of two, a maintenance support manager at the Burnham military camp, has also completed a tour in the Solomon Islands and was most recently deployed to assist in the aftermath of the Kaikoura earthquake.

He will continue to serve until the election.
