Labour puzzled by Christchurch jobless

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 22/04/2016

© Getty Labour is wondering why there are so many jobless people in Christchurch while the city is being rebuilt.

Wigram MP Megan Woods says there's been a 20 per cent increase in the number of people on the jobseeker benefit since March last year.

There were 5728 and now there are 6899, an increase of more than 1000.

"Why is it that in a city where so much money is being spent, there are so many people who can't find work?" she said.

"This raises real concerns about the skills training that has been available to locals, we need to provide opportunities for people to learn new skills so they can find work."

Ms Woods says she and social development spokeswoman Carmel Sepuloni are going to drill down into the numbers and find out what's happening.
