Lam steers Connacht to Pro12 title

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 29/05/2016

A Connacht side with a strong New Zealand flavour has won the Pro12 rugby championship.

Coached by former Samoa No.8 Pat Lam, Connacht beat four-time champions Leinster 20-10 in an all-Ireland final in Edinburgh.

It was a maiden title for the west Ireland province, whose starting lineup included ex-Chiefs second five-eighth Bundee Aki, former Blues hooker Tom McCartney and 2012 New Zealand under-20 captain Jake Heenan on the openside flank.

It completed a fine season for ex-Blues mentor Lam, who was recently named Pro12 coach of the year, and Aki, crowned Players' Player of the year.

The Pro12 championship features the leading clubs from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Italy.
