Former England coach Stuart Lancaster has joined Leinster as a member of their coaching team, replacing New Zealander Kurt McQuilken.

The Irish provincial side announced the defence coach role was going to 46-year-old Lancaster, who stepped down as England boss last November in the wake of the team's dismal World Cup showing.

McQuilkin, 50, left the club's coaching staff during the off-season to return to New Zealand for family reasons.

The New Zealander played 32 games for Leinster in the late 1990s and captained them to an Irish interprovincial championship. He also went on to play five Tests for Ireland.

Lancaster has worked with a number of sports teams during his break from full-time coaching.

He had a stint with the New Zealand Warriors rugby league club in August, along with the Counties Manukau provincial team.
