Last place for Black Sticks in London

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 26/06/2016

New Zealand have finished last at the Champions Trophy women's hockey tournament in London following a 4-3 loss to Great Britain in the play-off for fifth.

The Black Sticks never found their best in a disappointing tournament performance five weeks out from the Rio Olympics, opened up too easily on defence by the hosts in their final game.

Alex Danson scored a hat-trick for Great Britain, including the winning goal in the 52nd minute after New Zealand had fought back from 3-1 down early in the second half to level the scores.

New Zealand's only win at the six-nation tournament came over Great Britain in the round robin phase, when the prevailed 1-0. They also notched one draw and three losses.

On Sunday, Anita McLaren scored a slick goal to cancel out an early Danson strike.

Great Britain powered clear through Lily Owsley and Danson either side of halftime before Olivia Merry and Kelsey Smith struck twice in the space of eight minutes for New Zealand.
