Deportivo rescued a point against Real Betis through Celso Borges' 93rd-minute penalty to maintain new manager Pepe Mel's unbeaten start.

Deportivo have maintained their unbeaten record under new manager Pepe Mel with a 1-1 draw against Real Betis in La Liga.

Cristiano Piccini scored off the post with a deflected shot from a half-cleared corner on 70 minutes to give Betis the lead on Wednesday but on 93 minutes German Pezzella was adjudged to have fouled Celso Borges.

The Deportivo midfielder took the spot-kick himself to rescue a point for the home side.

Deportivo drew with Atletico Madrid in Mel's first game in charge and beat Sporting Gijon at the weekend.

This draw keeps them seven points clear of the drop zone and only four points behind Betis in mid-table.
