New Zealand have fallen to their second loss at the under-17 women's World Cup, beaten 2-0 by Spain after conceding twice in the last 10 minutes.

Captain Laia Aleixandri and substitute Claudia Pina broke through a spirited Kiwi defence at the Al Hassan International Stadium in Irbid, Jordan.

New Zealand coach Gareth Turnbull said solid defensive work had kept Spain at bay for 80 minutes, with the Kiwis looking to pressure on the counterattack.

"We tried to be a threat when we had possession in transition, though not as much as we would have liked, and it was a really good effort for 80 minutes."
