Otago Polytechnic nursing senior lecturer Vicki Yarker-Jones has put on her brewer's hat and created a beer that promises to hit the right note.

"We've brewed a beautiful Vienna lager," she said.

"If it were a dance, this beer would be a Viennese waltz."

Ms Yarker-Jones prepared ginger in three ways to infuse into the beer, named Ginger Ninga.

She said the Otago hospice supported the polytechnic's students for work placement, and it was the nurses there who came up with the idea for a Hops for Hospice event.

That event, at which Ginger Ninja will be launched, will be held during Hospice Awareness Week on May 15 to 21.
