Lee in hunt at TPC Sawgrass

NZN 12/05/2016

New Zealander Danny Lee has fired a sharp five-under 67 to sit four shots off the lead on the opening day of the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Florida.

Lee was hot over the front nine, picking up birdies at the second, fourth, seventh and ninth to be four-under at the turn.

His only blemish came when he bogeyed the par five 11th, but he finished strongly with birdies on the 14th and 16th to share 13th place with nine others.

World No.1 Jason Day has thrown down the gauntlet early with a course record-equalling bogey-free nine-under 63.

Having shot an 81 in his last competitive round at TPC Sawgrass a year ago and never bettered 68 on the course before, Day put together a sublime bogey-free first round.

He sits two shots clear of England's Justin Rose, Ireland's Shane Lowry and Americans Bill Haas, Brendan Steele and Cameron Tringale.

"I've got a really bad memory, which is kind of a good thing in golf, where you don't really remember the bad stuff," said Day of the 18-shot difference his last two Sawgrass rounds.

He now shares the course record with Greg Norman, Fred Couples, Roberto Castro and Martin Kaymer.

And he did it with just 24 putts.

"Tee to greens was actually really good, and then once I got on the greens I felt like I could hole everything," Day said.
