Lee in hunt at TPC Sawgrass

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 12/05/2016

New Zealander Danny Lee has fired a sharp five-under 67 to sit four shots off the clubhouse lead on the opening day of the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Florida.

Lee was hot over the front nine, picking up birdies at the second, fourth, seventh and ninth to be four-under at the turn.

His only blemish came when he bogeyed the par five 11th, but he finished strongly with birdies on the 14th and 16th to share 12th place with five others.

World No.1 Jason Day has thrown down the gauntlet early with a course record-equalling bogey-free nine-under 63.

Day has struggled at TPC Sawgrass in the past, but smashed his old personal best of 69 with a sublime performance to lead by two from England's Justin Rose, Ireland's Shane Lowry and American trio Brendan Steele, Bill Haas and Cameron Tringale.

A year ago Day left the course after shooting an 81 in round two to miss the cut. He was 18 shots better this time around, joining Greg Norman, Fred Couples, Roberto Castro and Martin Kaymer with the course record.
