Danny Lee is staring at an early exit from The Players Championship after a disastrous opening round in Florida.

The New Zealand No.1 shot a six-over 78 to share 138th place in the 144-strong field at Ponte Vedra Beach.

His round featured a double-bogey on the famed par-four 18th hole when his second shot found water.

Playing the front nine second, he made a recovery with two birdies before closing with bogeys on his last four holes. He shot seven bogeys in total.

Lee will need an enormous turnaround on Friday to make the cut at the prestigious PGA Tour event regarded widely as the "fifth major".

The world No.116 made a poor start to the season but has been better in recent months, making six of the last seven Tour cuts.

American William McGirt and Canadian Mackenzie Hughes share the lead in Florida on five-under.
