Leggett joins Wtgn mayoralty race

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 9/04/2016

Porirua's mayor has announced he'll join the race to run for Wellington mayor.

Nick Leggett announced his candidacy on Sunday, saying the city deserved great leadership but had been "stalled at the lights in recent years".

He's the fifth candidate in the race as deputy mayor Justin Lester, councillor Nicola Young and councillor Jo Coughlan are standing, as well as incumbent Celia Wade-Brown.

Mr Leggett says he'll stand as an independent.

"I've never believed party tickets play a constructive role in local government."

Localised decision-making will be a "key plank" of his campaign, such as asking neighbourhoods to take a lead in local priorities, he says.

He is in favour of a possible merger between Wellington and Porirua but says both cities would have to vote on a proposal.

Mr Leggett has been mayor of Porirua for six years.
