Libraries offer to clear fines for food

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 20/10/2016

Three libraries in the Thames-Coromandel district are giving borrowers the chance to feel good about having late returns.

For six weeks from Saturday, people using the Thames, Mercury Bay and Tairua libraries will be able to clear their overdue fees by donating food to local charities.

The Food for Fines promotion marks the start of NZ Book Week and will run until December 9.

Co-ordinator Linda Hayfield says people will have the option of donating a non-perishable food item instead of paying their fines, with each donated item reducing the total by $4.

"We recognise the approach to Christmas can be a stressful time for families who are already struggling," she said.

"So we hope our customers will embrace the opportunity to support local food banks by donating food instead of paying overdue fees."

Donations will be sent to Thames Food Bank and Whitianga Social Services.
