The suicide prevention trust, Life Matters, is to appear before parliament's health select committee to discuss its petition asking for an inquiry into mental health services.

Life Matters collected 1740 signatures on its petition and says the invitation to speak to the committee means it has "a foot in the door".

"We believe this is a critical step forward in making a difference to our community," it said in a statement.

"We want New Zealand to know we have been given the opportunity to be listened to, as we bring with us the voices of many affected by suicide."

Its representatives are due to speak to the committee on May 24.
