Lifejacket sales off to a swell start

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 8/12/2016

Just one week into the official start of summer, the sale of lifejackets are up.

Rebel Sport says sales have doubled, and Maritime NZ have sold more than 300 in just one week.

Maritime NZ has also provided $75,000 for Coastguard to run the "Old4New" lifejacket programme, where boaties can trade in old life jackets and get discounted new ones.

"New Zealand is a nation of boaties. It seems about one-third to half of our population takes to the water in 1 million recreational craft," said Maritime NZ education and communications manager, Pania Shingleton.

"Those big numbers - and we know they are increasing - mean boat safety is really important."
