Lions keep NZ teams at bay in Super Rugby

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 8/07/2016

The Lions remain one point clear of the second-placed Chiefs heading into the final round of Super Rugby after crushing the hapless Kings 57-21 in Johannesburg.

A fifth successive win, which included a crucial bonus point after scoring eight tries, leaves the Lions on 52 points and in the box seat to qualify first for the play-offs.

The Australasian group-leading Chiefs are on 51 points following their 50-5 rout of the Reds in Brisbane on Friday.

The Chiefs must draw or win their final game away to the Highlanders next week to have any chance of overhauling the South African leaders.

The Lions' last regular season game is away to the Jaguares in Buenos Aires, where victory would guarantee them top spot.

Three other New Zealand teams - the Crusaders, Hurricanes and Highlanders - were ranked third to fifth overall heading into round 16 matches which are yet to played.

Any of them could yet qualify in first place but would need other results to go their way.
