Local MP stunned by council conflict

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 25/08/2016

Tukituki MP Craig Foss says he's "flabbergasted" by the conflict that's going on between two councils involved in the Havelock North contamination crisis.

Hawke's Bay Regional Council on Thursday launched a formal investigation after suggesting Hastings District Council may have hidden evidence that the security of water bores was to blame for the contamination that's caused 4000 people to fall ill with gastro.

"When I saw that news I was just flabbergasted, as a local MP and as a ratepayer," Mr Foss told reporters.

"We are making good progress - and then I saw that news and now I just don't know what's going on.

"They all need to step up and communicate properly between themselves and with the ratepayers."

Mr Foss says he doesn't care about reputations.

"I care about getting this right and getting back to normal."

Local Government Minister Sam Lotu-Iiga says he can't get involved.

"We have a (government) inquiry, and we're confident it will be wide-ranging and will answer the questions the people of Havelock North want answered," he said.

"We're determined to get to the bottom of this."
