Lorde has admitted she" f***ed up" when she says being friends with Taylor Swift is "like having a friend with an autoimmune disease".

The 20-year-old said her friendship with Swift was "like having a friend with very specific allergies" in an interview with The Guardian.

"There are certain places you can't go together. Certain things you can't do. There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship. It's like having a friend with an autoimmune disease."

She's received public backlash for being insensitive and offensive, and was called out by the editor of a sexuality segment on Australian television channel SBS,Stephanie Marie Anderson.

"What an incredibly ignorant analogy to make @lorde,"

Lorde apologised on Twitter on Tuesday.

"Didn't mention Taylor, but regardless, I f***ed up and that was really insensitive. I'm sorry," she said.

Her long-awaited album, Melodrama, was released last week and she's been doing interviews globally to promote it.
