Lorde chips in for hungry kids

Kiwi singer Lorde has donated $20,000 to feed hungry Upper Hutt school kids - helping out after local businesses were slow to assist.

A local trust has identified about 50 children who have no lunch on a regular basis, and set up a Givealittle page Fuel the Need, asking for donations to help it "bridge that gap".

It teamed up with local schools and needs about $30,000 a year to provide lunches, RNZ reported.

However trust organiser Manuel Dalton struggled to get support from Upper Hutt businesses to kick start the project, and after emailing about 300 he got only got replies from two - both declining to help.

Now Lorde's donation has enabled the trust to exceed its fundraising goal of $20,000.

She posted a comment on the Givealittle page on Wednesday under her real name Ella Yelich-O'Connor, with her donation publicly visible.

"Good on you Manuel and Fuel the Need - hope this helps a little bit. Lots of love from a former kid who is passionate about all kids having access to food at school," the singer wrote.
