Homegrown superstar Lorde's sophomore album has been a hit since its release this month, and has now officially topped the US charts.

Melodrama debuted at the top of the US Billboard Hot 200 album chart on Monday morning (NZT).

The chart tracks the most popular music in the United States, combining traditional album sales with online streaming.

According to Billboard, Melodrama sold the equivalent of 109,000 albums, including 82,000 traditional album sales in its first week.

Her first album, Pure Heroine, sold 129,000 units in its first week in 2013, but only peaked at No. 3.

The 20-year-old singer was in England over the weekend playing her first-ever set at the iconic Glastonbury Festival.

Since Melodrama's release on June 16, it's been critically acclaimed internationally, and a number of singles from the album have been released.
