Low-key US Open groups for NZ pair

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 11/06/2016

Kiwi golfers Danny Lee and Tim Wilkinson have both drawn low-profile combinations in the US Open groupings announced on Saturday.

Lee, ranked 42nd in the world, will be joined by 21-year-old Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick and South Korean Byeong-Hun An.

Fitzpatrick, a former US Amateur champion, took a share of 48th place at the 2014 Open but impressed at the US Masters in April with a seventh-placed finish.

An's best result came last year when he won the European Tour's PGA Championship.

Wilkinson qualified for his first major tournament earlier this week when he finished second at a two-round sectional qualifier in Florida.

He is grouped with Sweden's Peter Hanson, who is playing his eighth US Open, with his best finish a tie for seventh in 2011.

Thai golfer Thitiphun Chuayprakong completes Wilkinson's group as a late replacement for three-time US Open champion Tiger Woods, who is still recovering from back surgery.

The US Open begins at Pennsylvania's Oakmont Country Club on June 16.
