Lowe keen for back-to-back Lions clashes

James Lowe says he's keen to have two bites at the British and Irish Lions cherry when the Test side begins its tour of New Zealand next month.

The 24-year-old winger is hoping he will be selected for the New Zealand Maori, who clash with the Lions in Rotorua on June 17.

He then wants to back up for the Chiefs when they face the tourists three days later in Hamilton - but admits that's the coaches' decision.

"I'd love to play in both games," Lowe said.

"It's up to the Chiefs whether they want to play me in a game which is not about the (Super Rugby) competition, but more about us."

The Tasman provincial player believes the Lions will have their work cut out for them with a gruelling tour schedule, playing ten games in a month.

And with their arrival imminent, Lowe's departure to Irish outfit Leinster at the end of the year has been kept firmly in the background.

He demurred when asked if he'd ever follow Jared Payne's lead and play for Ireland as a Kiwi-born rugby player.

"I'm a pretty patriotic person and a loyal Kiwi," Lowe said.

"I haven't thought about it too much, as in three years time I could be back in New Zealand - but I do want to play international rugby.

"I'd love to leave New Zealand with a Super Rugby title - that would be something quite cool."
