The largest shopping mall in the lower North Island will remain closed until Sunday after the 7.8 earthquake.

The Queensgate Shopping Centre in Lower Hutt has been closed since the quake as engineers carry out assessments.

It said where assessments have been completed there is no diminished capacity to the structure of the buildings although some parts of the mall suffered superficial damage.

It houses 180 retailers and on Wednesday some were allowed back into their shops to assess what they need to do to reopen.

It said on its website the mall would remain closed to the public until Sunday to allow work to clean up the shopping centre to be completed.
