Lowndes quickest in Darwin qualifying

Holden veteran Craig Lowndes has secured provisional pole position for Sunday's Supercars sprint in Darwin.

Lowndes was fastest in qualifying for the 70-lap race, breaking the lap record with a 1min 6.0259secs trip around Hidden Valley Raceway.

Nissan's Rick Kelly was second quickest, ahead of Chaz Mostert of Ford and Tim Slade in a Holden.

Saturday's race winner, Michael Caruso, rounded out the top five in his speedy Altima.

Three of Nissan's four entries were inside the top 10, with Todd Kelly securing the last spot.

Current series leader Jamie Whincup posted the ninth fastest time, just behind Ford's reigning champion Mark Winterbottom in eighth and Red Bull Racing teammate Shane van Gisbergen in seventh.

The leading 10 drivers will battle it out in a shootout at 10.45am local time (11.15am AEST) to lock in the grid positions for the afternoon race starting at 1.30pm (2pm).
