MacDonald, who played for the Crusaders for 11 years between 1997 and 2008, has signed a two-year contract and joins the coaching team led by new head coach Scott Robertson.

He will work alongside incumbent assistant backs coach Brad Mooar. An assistant forwards coach is still to be appointed.

MacDonald, who also accumulated 56 caps for the All Blacks from 2000 to 2008, said the appointment was an exciting step forward in his coaching career.

He will continue to coach Tasman in next year's national provincial rugby championship.
