A man carrying a large machete and his accomplice have robbed a Tauranga video rental store, police say.

The pair entered the United Video on Fraser Street just after 7.30pm on Tuesday, getting away with a small amount of money, Detective Kevin Shields said.

One was wearing a grey hoodie pulled over his head and white gloves and running shoes, while the other had a white scarf over his head, a blue "puffer" jacket and green camouflage pants.

One of the pair had been caught on security camera footage carrying a large wooden-handled machete, Det Shields said.
