Magnitude 4.9 quake south of St Arnaud

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake has been recorded in the upper South Island of New Zealand.

The quake shortly before 7pm on Saturday was centred 40km south of St Arnaud, a small alpine village.

GeoNet says it was at a depth of 29km.

There are no reports of damage.

More than 1300 people have reported they felt the quake but most said it was light or weak.
