Mahe Drysdale chasing Henley title record

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 27/06/2016

Olympic champion Mahe Drysdale is chasing a landmark victory in England as part of his preparation for the Rio Games.

Single sculling great Drysdale will seek a sixth win in the Diamond Challenge Sculls at the Henley Royal Regatta on the River Thames.

Doing so would equal the record of Australian Stuart MacKenzie, which has stood for more than half a century.

Drysdale's chief competition is expected to come from Dutch sculler Stefan Broenink who came fourth at the last World Cup in Poznan, which Drysdale won to confirm his favouritism to defend his Olympic title.

None of the other Rio-bound Kiwi rowers will compete at the 177-year-old regatta in Henley-on-Thames, preferring to continue their training block on the European mainland.
