A Malaysia Airlines plane has made an emergency landing at a Melbourne airport after reports of an engine fire, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) says.

Emergency crews were told about 300 passengers were onboard flight MH148 from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur.

An MFB spokesman said the plane dumped fuel before making the emergency landing about 3:00pm.

Airport officials and emergency services have not been able to confirm why the plane was grounded, but Melbourne Airport said on Twitter the plane landed safely.

"All operations at Melbourne Airport continue as normal," Melbourne Airport tweeted.

The plane was towed to a gate and it is understood the passengers have disembarked.

Paramedics are on scene and have so far not had to provide anyone with treatment.

Emergency crews were called to the airport about 2:20pm.
