Herbert's contract was terminated following last week's surprise 2-0 home loss to Yemen, the first leg of an Asian Cup qualifying play-off. It was their 11th defeat since Herbert took charge of the 174th-ranked side in September, 2015.

Football Association of the Maldives president Ahmed Thariq thanked Herbert for his efforts in a statement.

"For the time being it was the best solution. We had a meeting with coach Herbert and he also wanted to find a solution for this," Thariq said.

Herbert, whose role is inherited by assistant coach Ismail Mahfooz, was All Whites national coach for nine years until 2013, when they failed to qualify for the following year's World Cup.

The former New Zealand defender was in charge of the Wellington Phoenix from their inaugural A-League campaign in 2007 until 2013, before taking up a role with NorthEast United in the Indian Super League.
