An 85-year-old man was assaulted and robbed in his home by three males, two carrying knives, in what Counties Manukau police have described as an "horrendous crime".

The man was taken to Middlemore Hospital as a precaution after the incident on Saturday, but has been released and is getting victim support.

Police say three unknown men, their faces covered, arrived at the Peverill Cres address in Papatoetoe in a stolen car about 5pm.

They confronted the victim, assaulted him and ransacked the property, taking off with a coin collection and bank cards.

Police said a nearby neighbour noticed the vehicle arriving, took a photo of it, heard sounds of a struggle and rang 111.

She was chased and kicked in the leg by one of the offenders as they left.

The stolen vehicle - a red 2010 Nissan Juke, registration KFH463 - was found abandoned in Hilda Avenue, Mangere, early on Sunday morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Albie Alexander says police are carrying out area inquiries and will be doing a leaflet drop in an appeal for information.

"This was an absolutely horrendous crime by these three offenders who have targeted a vulnerable elderly man in his own home," he said.

He commended the neighbour for her actions, which he said had undoubtedly startled the men and prevented further offending.
