A Rotorua man has admitted he abandoned a 2-year-old who was inside a car he stole, but says he is not guilty of a robbery six days earlier.

George Raymond Harris, 31, pleaded guilty via audio visual link in the Rotorua District Court on Tuesday to abandoning a child under six and unlawfully taking the car the toddler was in on April 24.

Judge Jocelyn Munroe suppressed the name of the abandoned child and that of his mother, the car's owner.

However, Harris pleaded not guilty to robbing Jane Newman of $300 at an ATM machine in the city's mall six days earlier.

Judge Munroe remanded Harris in custody until May 29 for sentencing on the charges he admitted.

He is also to be sentenced that day on shoplifting and theft charges. The robbery charge will be called again then.
