A man who threatened police with a gun and led them on a pursuit in south Auckland has been arrested.

The 30-year-old man pointed a firearm at police after they approached a car he had crashed on Bairds Road in Otara.

The man had earlier failed to stop for a routine police check on the same street with officers giving chase but abandoning shortly after because of concerns over the man's driving.

After being arrested at the scene of the crash, he has now been charged with using a firearm against police, two counts of burglary, possession of methamphetamine for supply, reckless driving and failing to stop.

He is due to appear in Manukau District Court on Thursday.
