A man has been arrested at the scene of an armed police lockdown of a suburban New Plymouth street.

The armed offenders squad set up the cordon around part of Carrington Street in Upper Vogeltown after being called to a house at about 6am on Monday over reports of a dispute.

About 9am police said they had arrested a man and the cordon was being removed. Residents within the area, which ran from the junction with Huatoki Street to the roundabout at Tarahua Road, were earlier told to remain inside until contacted by police.

Diversions were in place but drivers were being warned to avoid the area.
