A man who was chased by police and arrested after a suspicious Auckland house fire is being treated in hospital for burns to his hands and arms.

Police say their clan lab team has been sent to the Milford property, but it's too early to say what charges the man will face.

Emergency services were alerted at 5.40pm on Wednesday to smoke coming from the garage of the house in Inga Rd.

Police say a man was seen moving pots and pans in an agitated state.

When officers arrived, the man tried to flee but was caught and arrested.

Police at the scene and a member of the public who tried to help put out the fire had to be decontaminated.

An unwell dog at the house was taken by animal control officers for treatment.
