A man has been arrested over an alleged "brutal assault" on a Papatoetoe dairy owner, and charged over 15 armed robberies in Auckland and Waikato.

Police earlier released CCTV footage of an aggravated robbery of a Papatoetoe dairy on July 7, where a man was shown seriously assaulting a dairy owner with a knife.

The man's knife broke during the attack and he fled the scene, while the dairy owner was remarkably not seriously injured, police said.

Police also said the same offender was a suspect in dairy robberies in Otahuhu and Point Chevalier, which were robbed at gunpoint.

A 34-year-old Mt Roskill man has been charged in relation to the robberies.

Detective Inspector Fa'amanuia Va'aelua said police were "very pleased" with the arrest.

"We hope this will go some way to helping reassure the community."

The accused will appear in Manukau District Court on Monday.
