A man has been arrested in connection with what police say was a serious assault in Queenstown.

The incident on Brunswick Street on Sunday night has left the male victim in hospital.

The extent of his injuries is still being assessed, but he is considered to be in a stable condition.

Police say it appears the two men know each other.

They want to speak to anyone who might have been in the Brunswick Street and Thompson Street area between 10.15pm and 10.45pm on Sunday.

The arrested man, a 29-year-old local, has been charged with injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He has been bailed to appear in Queenstown District Court next Monday.
