Man arrested over stolen police car

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 26/06/2016

A Whangamata man has been arrested after allegedly driving off in a police patrol car with firearms locked in it at a routine traffic stop.

At about 11.30pm on Saturday the passenger of a vehicle that was stopped in Whangamata for speeding took the officer's patrol car, police said.

Police recovered the car three hours later in Opoutere and all firearms were still secured in a locked box in the vehicle.

Police said it was a "rare and isolated incident".

A 44-year-old man will appear in court later this week charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.
