Man calls ambulance, flees police custody

Police are on the hunt for a man considered dangerous who allegedly made a break from custody while being checked by ambulance staff at a Porirua courthouse.

Rikihana "Ricky" Tawhai, 27, is being sought after escaping from custody at about 10am on Saturday.

Police said he presented as ill until an ambulance was called, and then ran off while being assessed by paramedics.

The incident would be reviewed, but the current focus was on finding Tawhai, police said.

He Is considered dangerous and should not be approached, with anyone who sees him asked to report it immediately.

Tawhai has been described as having tattoos on both arms, including of five bulldog heads on his left and is 170cm tall.
