A man has been charged following a nearly 10-hour negotiation after he fired a crossbow during a family dispute.

The 39-year-old was arrested about 2am on Sunday, after the armed offenders squad entered his home using tear gas.

Police were called to the address in the Taranaki township of Otako just after 4pm on Saturday, when they received reports of a crossbow being fired during a domestic incident.

No one was injured, however the man would not leave the house and verbally threatened police.

Police had to forcefully enter the home, almost 10 hours later, when negotiations failed.

Charges of assault with a weapon and threatening to kill have been laid against the man.

He will be appearing in the New Plymouth District Court on Monday
