A man has been arrested after a woman was subjected to what police say was a violent pre-dawn assault on an Auckland street.

The 31-year-old man is due to appear in Auckland District Court on Thursday facing charges that include abduction, assault with a weapon, sexual violation and robbery.

The charges arise from an incident at 5.10am on Wednesday.

The offender allegedly attacked the woman as she was walking to work along Mt Albert Rd and threatened her with a knife before fleeing.

Detective Senior Sergeant Glenn Baldwin says it was a traumatic experience for the woman, who is being provided with plenty of support.

"Police responded swiftly to the attack and one of our officers was able to quickly identify the offender, based on information provided by the victim," he said.

"He was apprehended soon after the attack, which is a great result and has provided the victim with some comfort."
